First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, Poughkeepsie, NY

An Open and Affirming Congregation

No matter who you are or where you may be on your spiritual journey, we welcome you with open arms.

Please find service times listed below.

To Whom and When is Communion offered here?

Communion is offered the first Sunday of each month.

Communion in the United Church of Christ is open to all.

Christ is the spiritual host and invites you to join him and his church at the table where we share the bread and the cup.

For us, this is a spiritual/symbolic act that is a mystery and which communicates God's love for us, our love for one another, and our call to become Jesus' body on earth.

There are those who come to the table, not really understanding but knowing that it is a rite of the church.  There are others who come for whom the rite has such deep meaning it becomes sacramental.  However we come to the table, we are reminded that we are united in the love, life, and teaching of Jesus.

You are welcome!

Upcoming Special Worship Events

Summer of 2009

Trinity Sunday - June 7 - A day when we think of God as multi-faceted and yet unified.  A wonderful opportunity to use liturgy that rises out the mists of Ireland and Scotland.  It will also be a day when Pastor Bruce and Gary Brinn (our Intern) will be sharing the message with a dialogue sermon.  Naturally, the two will also shre in the leading of the Sacrament of Holy Communion.

Baptism - Church Picnic - Farewell to Gary Brinn, Intern....All this takes place on Sunday, June 14.  Yes a lot will be going on.  We will celebrate the baptim of one of our own.  We will both thank and say goodbye to Gary who has spent the petter part of a year with us as a volunteer, part-time intern.  This may also be the last Sunday for the choir singing before the summer recess and then when worship is finished, we will picnic together.

Sunday, June 28th, worsip will be a service of story telling using Biblical and Spiritual stories.  Everything will be wrapped in stories, even the songs we sing will be story songs.  To create more of an atmosphere for this, worship will shift from the sanctuary into Margaret Chapel and we will worship in a circle.

Sunday, July 26th, worship will take on a zen like quality as we worship around a "sand rock garden".  Wait and see!  Once again, worship will shift from the sanctuary into Margaret Chapel.  Worshipers will be gathered in a circle around the sand-rock garden.  The theme?  Prayer and yes adults will have an opportunity to prayerfully play in the sand.

Sunday, August 23rd, Worship will be centered around folk singers, Kevin and Carol Beck.  This service will also take place in Margaret Chapel.  The "traditional order" will be set aside, so as to allow the music to shape the atmosphere for worship.  There will be prayer, scripture, message, offering and lots of music.  Kevin and Carol Beck have shared the national stage with other folk musicians such as Harry Chapin, Utah Phillips and Pete Seeger.
